Description

Western Australian Birds has been commissioned by ASME WA (Australian Society for
Music Education) and published with its financial support. It is mainly addressed to
primary and junior high-school String Ensembles.

Western Australian Birds explores the sound of native Western Australian birds
such as: the Western Bristlebird, the Western Rosella and the Red-capped Parrot.
Each bird’s specific call is the organising principle of composition and will be
clearly identifiable in each of the pieces.

The provided recordings of all the birds’ calls may be played by the teacher
in order to show the connection between the songs and the birds’ calls.
This composition gives the teacher the opportunity to make interdisciplinary
connections with biology/excursions/bird watching. The teacher may also
deepen the concept and provide examples of program music in musical history
such as Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and to explore the connections between
nature and music.
